Senior citizens will soon be able to access cash from the government's social protection programme from the comfort of their living rooms through their mobile phones. Over half a million people who have attained the age of 70 who were registered last year will receive payments for January and February at the end of this month under the Older Persons Cash Transfer programme
The country's social security programme which benefits those aged 70 and above will be rolled out starting next week. Those covered under the programme will receive a monthly stipend of 2,000 beginning next week. Unlike in the past, this cash transfer programme is universal and targets every willing elderly person within that age set.
The government will now enrol all the 1.3 million people above the age of 70 years in the National Health Insurance Programme, Deputy President William Ruto said today.
Speaking at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies when he officially opened the second National Social Protection Conference, Mr Ruto said the step is in line with the government’s aim of achieving universal health coverage. Source
